Indeed, Edox has a very strict protocol and very powerful control instruments that allow to test the timepieces up to a depth of 1’600 meters.
The Edox watch is placed in a dry chamber and the air-pressure is increased. The machine detects the smallest variation in the case size. If the case expands, even slightly, then the watch is not water resistant.
The Edox watch is placed in a chamber which is half filled with water and half air. Air pressure is increased while the watch is out of the water, then the watch is slowly immersed into the water. Once the watch is completely immersed, the air pressure is slowly released. If bubbles come out of the watch it means that air seeped into the watch prior to immersion AND the watch is not water resistant. This method is generally used as a second test to pin-point the problem area.
When assembling a watch, it is possible for residual moisture to remain in the watch unnoticed, despite various precautions.
To determine whether there is still residual moisture in a watch, Edox watchmakers heat the watch to about 70 degrees Celsius for about 7 minutes. Ice-cold drops of water are then drizzled onto the watch glass. If the watch glass is now fogged up with moisture from the inside, the watch must be carefully dried again from the inside and the test repeated. If the watch glass does not mist up, the watch is completely dry and may be sold.
In order to control the water resistance to 100 meters to 1600 meters, the Edox watch is placed in a high pressure chamber which is totally filled with water. The Edox watch can be subjected to pressures of 10, 20, 30, 50, 100 and 150 atmospheres for 30 minutes.
